These pieces are fired in a saggar (a large lidded container, usually ceramic), surrounded by fresh vegetation, sawdust, shredded newspaper and many other natural elements and minerals. The pot is placed into a saggar with the addition of one or more elements or minerals and then fired to a different range of temperatures depending on what magnificent colors and effects we are looking for. These pieces garner no glazes and all markings and colors are a direct result of the elements added to the saggar and the firing schedule we used. In some of our pots, you will see streaks or markings of black.that are a result of certain elements burning and the lack of oxygen creating carbon. The imagery you see in these pots are permanent, though remaining slightly porous, they are not intended to hold water or used for food service.
